Methodology and sources

If you cannot explain where a number comes from, that number is useless. Here is everything NAVEO uses to calculate.

The formula

There is only one, and it does not change:

activity data × emission factor = kgCO₂e
kgCO₂e ÷ 1.000 = tCO₂e

The calculation always happens on the server. NAVEO does not trust numbers sent by your browser: it recalculates everything from the raw data.

Important

Artificial intelligence does not calculate

NAVEO uses AI to explain results, draft summaries and propose actions. Never to produce or modify an emissions figure. By the time the AI receives anything, it has already been calculated.

What leaves NAVEO for the recommendations service carries no company name, no tax ID, no email addresses and no documents. Only totals, scopes, sector, region and size.

The three scopes

Scope 1

Direct emissions

What burns or leaks inside your operation: fuel for your own vehicles, boilers, generators and refrigerant top-ups.

Scope 2

Purchased energy

Mainly the electricity you buy from the grid. The emissions happen at the generating plant but are attributed to whoever consumes it.

Scope 3

The rest of the chain

Travel, employee commuting, waste, water, logistics, purchases. In the MVP, NAVEO covers a bounded subset and declares it explicitly.

Emission factors

A factor is never overwritten. When it changes, a new version is created and the previous one stays on record. That is why an old report remains reconstructable.

How Readiness is calculated

"Not applicable" is deliberately excluded from the calculation: if a company has no fleet, there is no sense penalising it for not declaring litres of diesel.

What it means and what it does not

Readiness 87% DOES mean:

87% of the information required for this measurement is available or documented.

Readiness 87% does NOT mean:

  • — that the company is 87% sustainable
  • — that the measurement is 87% accurate
  • — any kind of environmental rating

Declared limitations

These limitations also appear in every report.

Scope 3 is bounded
NAVEO covers a subset of Scope 3 categories, not the entire value chain. The categories included are listed explicitly in every report.
Factors are averages
An emission factor is a representative average, not a measurement of your specific facility. Two companies with the same consumption get the same result even if their equipment differs.
Result quality depends on data quality
An estimated figure produces an estimated result. That is why Readiness always travels alongside the number: without it, the figure tells only half the story.
NAVEO does not verify
Third-party verification is an independent process carried out by an accredited body. NAVEO produces the measurement and the evidence; it does not validate itself.
